Spam Crazy

I just wanted to apologise to anyone who has recently come across any spam comments either on my blog or via subscribing to the blog comments feed.

Over the past week or so, and particularly the last few days, I have been utterly bombarded with spam, and am trying to tweak the Spam module filters to stop any of the stuff ever getting published.

I think it would be a shame to force people to preview comments and/or use a captcha, so hopefully I can get it under control quickly.

On a brighter note, Dan suggested to me that Spam module configuration might make an interesting blog topic, and I agree. Whilst this wouldn't strictly be Drupal theming related, I think it would be nice to have one post a month or so on an important non Drupal theming area - agree or disagree?
Let me know.

Thanks,
Laurence.

P.S. I'm currently using the Spam module, but if anyone has a better suggestion just leave a comment (no spam please ;) ).

The Akismet module for Drupal works great for me at my blog: www.rainnoplay.com. It automatically filters out spam and leaves genuine comments untouched. Once in a blue moon it will allow a spam comment in that it doesn't recognise, but you can always delete that.

Laurence, I was wondering what your objection is to requiring a preview for comment posters. I agree that captcha is annoying, but I actually appreciate when a blog allows me to preview my posts so that I can see if links come out correctly--and I like to give what I've written a once-over before clicking submit. And for those who don't want to make use of the preview, it's just an extra click, so not a huge burden. But perhaps there's an aspect to requiring preview that I'm not thinking of.

I agree with Dan.
Additionally, I would say that nowadays, with all the spam we have to deal with, I don't see why a visitor could not help us with one more click.
The site I am working at is not online yet but I intend to use the following modules: BadBehaviour and http:BL to stop any garbage to access the site in the first place and if it does, there will be Akismet waiting to check. And of course required Preview.
I hope they'll all work fine when the site is live and no bugs make me to disable any. We'll see....

Hi everyone,
very useful stuff :).
I think I am going to go with the required preview option on comments. It wasn't that I had any great objection to this before, I just thought some people might find it a bit annoying. Anyway, judging by your responses it seems that's not the case, so thanks for the help.
